Arthritis Foundation and Stryker Orthopaedics Sponsoring Free Forum At North Cypress Medical Center for Sufferers of Knee and Hip Pain
- Area surgeons presenting on arthritis issues and advancements in joint replacement -
May 23, 2007 (HOUSTON, TX)North Cypress Medical Center is hosting a free seminar for the general public about new options for arthritis
treatment and management on Saturday, June 16 at 9:30 a.m. Currently, more than 70 million Americans suffer from some form of arthritis,
which is a degenerative disease. The event will feature presentations by three accomplished surgeons from the Advanced Orthopaedics Sports
Medicine that are on staff at North Cypress Medical Center:
1. Alain Elbaz, M.D., is sharing information about anterior hip replacement, an approach that lessens the pain and recovery time following
surgery. This approach allows the surgeon to reach the hip joint from the front of the hip rather than the side or back without disturbing
the most important muscles for hip function.
2. David Mack, M.D., is offering insight related to cutting-edge computer-assisted navigation technologies for knee replacement surgery that
allow surgeons to replace joints with pinpoint accuracy and with smaller incisions. He also is introducing attendees to the Triathlon Knee,
a gender-specific joint replacement option that is tailored to the patients unique anatomy for a perfect fit.
3. James Fogarty, M.D., is talking about minimally invasive surgery (MIS) procedures used during hip replacements. This approach utilizes
smaller incisions and reduces the amount of muscles and tendons impacted during surgery.
Arthritis is one of the most prevalent chronic health problems faced by Americans, said Kim Jessup, executive director of the Texas
chapter of the Arthritis Foundation.
Arthritis impacts basic, everyday activities such as walking, dressing, and bathing, and half of those with arthritis do not realize that
treatment options exist to help them, she said.
Advancements in knee and hip joint replacement are allowing patients who previously were in severe discomfort, or even disabled, to become
pain free and many times return to the activities that they enjoy, said Clint Hampton, south Texas branch manager for Stryker Orthopaedics.
New technologies and approaches, like those being discussed at this seminar, have greatly improved the results of joint replacement surgery
and allowed patients to recover much more quickly than ever before.
According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) about 500,000 hip and knee replacement
procedures are performed annually in the United States. This figure is expected to increase as the population ages, as baby boomers live
more active lives and as arthritis affects more people.
Those interested in attending the event can RSVP to the Arthritis Foundation at (713) 942-9063 or tnavarro@arthritis.org.
High resolution, digital images of some of the technologies being discussed at the seminar are available upon request.
