Nexus Specialty Hospital Announces New Program Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation


- Dr. Markowski brings strong medical, research, and management expertise -

February 8, 2007 (HOUSTON, TX)Nexus Specialty Hospital recently welcomed Janusz Markowski, M.D. as its new program director of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Dr. Markowski has more than four decades of experience as an associated professor in Baylor College of Medicines Department of Physical Medicine. For the last six years, he also has served as a consultant in physical medicine and rehabilitation and as the medical director for rehabilitation at Kindred Hospital. He has served in several other faculty positions, including with Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston and Atlanta, Georgia, and Conradie Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. He currently has courtesy faculty appointments at Kindred Hospital, St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital, The Methodist Hospital, Texas Childrens Hospital, and Hermann Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Markowski has proven himself to be an accomplished medical professional and his active research background gives him unique insights regarding innovative approaches and practices, said Geoffrey Swaby, administrator for Nexus Specialty Hospital. We are eager to leverage Dr. Markowskis knowledge and skills to meet the various wide-ranging needs of our patients.

As program director, Dr. Markowski will help develop treatment procedures and protocols for patients at Nexus Specialty Hospital. He also will establish policies, procedures, and guidelines and spearhead training initiatives as well as work with case managers and utilization review staff to evaluate patient care plans and strategies.

Dr. Markowski received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Academy of Medicine in Lodz, Poland. He participated in internships at various hospitals affiliated with the Academy of Medicine and then with Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. He then performed his residency at the University of Texas, South Western Medical School in Dallas. He was received numerous awards, including being honored with the Distinguished Service Award from Baylor College of Medicines Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabiliation in 2002 and being recognized as one of the Top Doctors of the City and one of the Best Doctors in America.

Nexus Specialty Hospital is a Long Term Acute Care hospital with 75 beds on two campuses in the suburbs of North Houston. The facility has the advantage of exceptional campus locations offering high tech care in a beautiful wooded environment as well as a more home-like environment for those requiring fewer therapeutic interventions. The original 21-bed campus opened in The Woodlands, TX in 1995 and a new 54-bed campus opened less than a mile away in Shenandoah, TX in 2005. Both facilities operate under the same license as a Medicare provider-based entity with the original campus providing specialty wound care and life care placement.

The new main Shenandoah campus has six state-of-the art ICU beds, 26 telemetry beds to monitor cardiac status, an on-site GI lab, and a full service rehab department consisting of OT, PT and Speech Therapy.
