New Assistant Medical Director Joins Houstons HealthBridge Childrens Hospital

- Pediatric chief resident from UT-Houston med school supporting new director -

January 5, 2007 (HOUSTON, TX)Nexus Health Systems recently announced that Shih-Ning Liaw, M.D., has assumed the role of assistant medical director at HealthBridge Childrens Hospital in Houston. He will provide assistance to Dr. Robert Yetman, medical director at HealthBridge, who also recently joined the hospitals administration.

For the past four years, Dr. Liaw has served as a resident at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, including as pediatric chief resident for the last year. He also has been medical director of the CHOSEN Clinic, another University of Texas institution that serves as a medical home for children with special health needs, since January 2006. Many children who have been treated at HealthBridge pass through the CHOSEN Clinic for long-term outpatient care.

We are really excited about the new medical leadership taking the helm at HealthBridge Childrens Hospital, said John W. Cassidy, MD, president and CEO of Houston-based Nexus Health Systems. Dr. Liaw has proven himself to be a strong medical clinician and has a well-rounded professional and community pedigree that complements our leadership team.

In his role as assistant medical director, Dr. Liaw will assist Dr. Yetman with management, training, policy and procedure oversight, and much more. Dr. Liaw also will fulfill the directors duties in Dr. Yetmans absence.

Dr. Liaw, who lives in Houston, gained a wealth of medical and patient care skills during various experiences, both in the United States and abroad.

He served as a hospice volunteer in Pennsylvania, as a counselor at a camp for autistic children in North Carolina, as a clinical fellow studying autism at UCLA, and as a volunteer on a missionary trip to China, where he assisted individuals with leprosy and helped develop a clinic.

Fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese, Dr. Liaw is involved in several associations and has given more than a dozen presentations. He also has been honored multiple times, including as Outstanding Pediatric Resident by the Houston Pediatric Society in 2005 and Best Pediatric Intern at The University of Texas-Houston Medical School in 2003.

Dr. Liaw is certified by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, the Neonatal Resuscitation Program and Pediatric Advanced Life Support program. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of California-Los Angeles College of Medicine and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a double-major Bachelor of Science degree in biology and classical studies from Duke University, where he was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
