- Houston company participating in interactive session and panel discussion
June 3, 2008 (HOUSTON, TX)FireSabre, a Houston-based Second Life building and consulting company, is joining more than 18,000 teachers, educators,
technology specialists, and policy makers for the 29th annual National Educational Computing Conference in San Antonio June 29 July 2. The National Educational Computing Conference is
presented by the International Society for Technology in Education.
FireSabre representatives are participating in the Second Life & Virtual Worlds Playground, an interactive exhibit designed to demonstrate the value of
Second Life in helping educators connect with youth and improve student achievement. FireSabres president also will be participating in a panel
discussion about how Second Life is making a measurable difference for schools.
Fred Fuchs, president of FireSabre, says that schools are finding that Second Life represents a powerful tool to engage todays students using the
communications channels that the video game generation uses outside the classroom.
Virtual worlds help teachers transcend issues of fashion, cliques, and peer pressure and serve to engage all students, regardless of the social or
socioeconomic dynamics that typically govern student relationships, he said. While Second Life is still in its infancy, it is already having profound
impacts on student grades, classroom discourse, and real-life school environments, including for previously marginalized students.
Second Life is a 3-d virtual world with more than 13 million registered users who use it for social, educational, and marketing purposes. Major
corporations such as IBM, Starwood, Nissan Motors, and CareerBuilder, along with more than 300 schools and universities currently have a presence in
Second Life. FireSabre helped develop the first education project in Teen Second Life, a separate community developed specifically for teens between the
ages of 13 and 17, and built the first Teen Second Life project, known as Ramapo Island, for a school, Suffern Middle School in New York. Last year, more
than 800 students and 15 teachers at Suffern participated in projects in the schools Second Life environment projects ranging from math to science to
art to health to social studies. One teacher at the school conducted a mock trial involving students in conjunction with her teaching of John Steinbecks
novel Of Mice and Men.
