darbyDarnit - Trusted Business Advisors
darbyDarnit, led by Petri Darby, APR, is a Houston public relations firm that provides PR, marketing communications, and
freelance writing services to clients ranging from entrepreneurial ventures to major corporations, non-profits to PR and
marketing agencies. Your success and the success of your business is as important to us as it is to you. And we know that
your business is different from every other business. So we invest time listening and learning from you about the
challenges and opportunities that you face before offering advice and implementing solutions.
We focus on action before messaging
You've no doubt heard or said "We have a PR problem." But if you really think about the many issues facing your company,
most actually are not PR problems. If someone steals from the company, that's an internal controls problem. If someone is
hurt on the job, that's a safety issue. If your company gets sued, that's a legal problem. Many companies focus too much
on "spin" - which is what an organization does when it responds from a defensive standpoint without action to support it
- rather than first focusing on attacking the problem, dealing with the issue and managing perception.
Public relations can help:
- Build strong relationships between your company and key audiences
- Generate goodwill and preserve your company's reputation
- Boost your company's sales
- Enhance employee morale
- Educate and influence target groups
- And more
These things can only happen if public relations efforts are focused on helping your company demonstrate a commitment to
operating as a good corporate citizen by examining policies, practices and relationships and determining how to
continually improve them.
Strategic, integrated, tailored solutions
Media relations is not the answer for every company. Nor is advertising always an appropriate, or affordable, medium
through which to reach your key business audiences. darbyDarnit develops targeted public relations solutions based on
your company's unique goals and target constituencies.
The story behind the darbyDarnit name
Petri was anything but a political junky. But it was college and he was young and impressionable. His friends convinced
him to run for student government. At the time he thought they were serious. Now he thinks they just wanted a good laugh.
It's taken him a few years to admit it was funny.
With a campaign staff of one and even less know-how, Petri needed a catchy slogan. It had to be fresh, a bit edgy and
able to appeal to a skeptical audience. While brainstorming with a fellow creative, "darbyDamnit" surfaced as a first
option. The concept, although solid, was a bit too militant given Petri's typically, and sometimes annoyingly, cheery
nature. The subsequent creative banter produced "darbyDarnit" and both a slogan and a lifelong calling card were born.
Deservedly, Petri did not win. He came in third in a two-woman race. However, throughout election day, shouts of "DARBY
DARNIT" could be heard ringing from voting booths across the University of Arizona campus, serving as a testament to the
slogan and public relations effort that had inspired the passions of traditionally dormant spirits.
Sadly, Petri is still contesting the election results more than a decade later, although not because he wants to be the
vice president. In fact, after losing he was appointed to a better role - a cushy lobbying position on the president's
cabinet (no, he did not know Jack Abramoff). He really just wants an excuse to go back to college.
We also are happy to provide you Petri's more official, albeit less interesting, biography.
